Yesterday evening saw Konami’s E3 press conference. They began with Hideo Kojima saying that he would be announcing four games. Three of those were, as expected, entries in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, but the fourth game was a bit of a mystery. There had been talk of a secret “Mask” project, the only clue to that being a game that Kojima showed at E3 2008, then called Lords of Shadow.
Well, Kojima showed the new trailer, which began with narration by Patrick Stewart.
Kojima Productions is in charge of a “rebirth” of the long-running Castlevania franchise (which had its start on the Nintendo Entertainment system), and it looks like they’ll finally be the ones to successfully transition the franchise from sidescroller to 3-D game.
Dubbed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, the game looks to be a departure from the Belmont and Morrison families that have been the staple of the Castlevania franchise. As far as setting is concerned, it appears to be taking place in Southern Europe during the Middle Ages. The main character is named Gabriel, and seems to be pursuing a mask that has the ability to bring back the dead so that he can revive his late wife.
Kojima described the stormy nature of the game as being reflective of the tumultuous and stormy times in which we live, saying that we must all pull together to make it through.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be available for XBOX 360 and PS3 sometime next year.
